How to identify and treat injury resulting from over use

My husband has had tennis elbow twice. The first time he ended up getting a cortisone shot for it. While painful for a few days after, it worked great, and he has never had a problem again in 17-18 years. Just this past spring he got it in his other elbow. The Dr told him to take an anti-inflammitory, ice it, to wear an elbow brace and avoid using his arm. Easier said than done. However, when he retired in July and life became one big holiday, it eventually went away on it’s own. Probably took 5 months though.
